For whatever it's worth, I've also been using the DS-2 recorder. I just got it (to do interviews for a feature article on Grendel--oh boy!) & it seems to record well under less-than-ideal conditions. My only complaint is that it is SO adaptable with so many different settings and options that you really need to spend a little time learning how to use it. My brain space for that sort of thing is kind of exhausted. (Speaking of which, does anybody out there know how to change the time on a Philippe Stark Fossil watch--the kind with 4 buttons on the sides?)
Another recording option for ipod-ers is the tiny little Griffin italk that snaps onto your ipod & actually records quite well. That requires no study time and an IQ of about 40 to use. If it's on the ipod and you turn the ipod on, it automatically goes to a screen with "start record" (or something like that). You can just download the files to itunes. Unfortunately, the italk isn't compatible with the 5g ipod (the video) but a new little stereo recording device for the 5g ipod was apparently at shows in January & was supposed to ship to stores in April, but isn't there yet. I think the new one one is by Belkin. Supposedly it has good enough sound quality to use for recording music!
