Deja Vu! .....Deja Vu.....Deja Vu

Ahhhhhhh Brings back the memories of Festivals at
Tulane, 1974.....Kent State, 1979..... & Emory U
-AT- Atlanta 1982.

Tulane with everyone in a overly large auditorium
watching Nixon resign on a console television
sitting dwarfed on a bare stage. As the glowing
animated picture of him made his farewell up from
behind the console arose a puppet of Nixon in
red, white and blue waving a flag and mouthing
the words from the TV. The puppeteer hidden
behind I think was Carrol Spinny or Steve Hansen.
The conservative wing of the P of A walked out
outraged. "This wasn't puppetry" as was the
condemnation of Whilim Waroonies Dadaesque puppet
show using some balloons as women's breasts

Kent State when Richard Bay had to leave early
for alluding to the Kent State killings when he
did his
Potpourri opus mocking muppets, spongees and
yours truly, I thought it was
hilarious, especially when I remembered the taxi
driver who took us to the campus spending the
entire trip blasting hippies and
emphasizing that "they got what they deserved".
The atmosphere there was filled with " bad vibes"
and will be still.

Emory U where The Underground Railway and the
Heart of the Beast made their first appearances
at any Festival and were accused of politicizing
the Festival. The Railway presented an amazing
anti war piece in shadows using for a vehicle
Stravinski's Firebird. At the general meeting it
was suggested by older staid members that
"political statements had no place in the puppet
theater"

Do we always have to be so self absorbed? Isn't
it a goal of puppetry to hold a "mirror up to
nature"?. Too bad Gore didn't use puppets. I
think I'll go to see the movie first chance.
Thanks for bringing it up Emmy and thank you Mr
Bell, as always, most grateful for your comments.
