Regarding who pays for the dalang's performance. For the particular
performances that I Made Sidia was creating, initially funding from
non-profits that were donating funding after the Bali Bomb. They did
a performance at Kuta and were broadcast on TV and did talk backs
with psychologists and such involved since in the beginning the
project was conceived as a pot-traumatic stress reliever. Then their
were school performances funded from the same source.

State support was also involved in that Sidia is on the faculty of
STSI/IKI the University of the Arts and rehearsals could be held at
the school and students in the Puppetry and music department were
helping with the music. The piece was also taken around Indonesia on
some funding that is probably related to the school (though I could
be wrong on this).

This performance as it involved multiple dalang and a large group of
musician and technical stuff is a bit different than the usual
performance which is a smaller ensemble (4 musicians and a dalan).
In those instances it is usually funded by the group sponsoring a
ceremony. These dalang perform in those context too and deal with
issues they care about, from politics to ecology--though they are not
being hired for that purpose per se. They are asked to perform to
help complete a ceremony. They usually do not get paid any fixed
amount but the host or group organizing the ceremony gives them a
donation that is as generous as they can. Most dalang would never
turn down a gig because the people did not have money, but he might
if he is already booked for that day/time. Puppeteers perform as a
social and religious responsibility to the community.
