I don't know what the rubber is, but if it smells that
bad, I would first try sealing it in a plastic bag or
two, and storing it in a plastic, preferably air tight
bin. If it still stinks, put it outside in the  shade,
but I would not let it freeze. Some of these chemicals
are nasty, which is why my house is a puppet-free
zone. Don't pollute yourself!
