Date: Tue, 9 May 2006 09:35:54 -0800 (GMT-08:00) To: puptcrit-AT-lists.driftline.org Subject: [Puptcrit] puppets & opera Dear Jim and other critters, We (Carter Family Marionettes - Northwest Puppet Center) have been staging marionette operas with live music and professional singers on an annual basis for several years. So far we have done: "La Grandmere Amoureuse" "Il Girello" "The Burning House" "The Sneeze of Hercules" "The Dragon of Wantley" "The Magic Flute" This week we open our newest marionette opera: "The Tragedy of Tragedies: The Life and Death of Tom Thumb" It plays May 12-21, 2006. Aside from "Magic Flute" (which was not done with puppets until fairly modern times), all these operas were either staged originally with marionettes or were adapted to marionettes during the baroque era. This June, we will be performing Haydn's "The Burning House" in Potsdam, Germany with 28 piece orchestra. In April of 2007, we are staging "The Liberation of Ruggiero from the Island of Alcina" composed by Francesca Caccini in 1623. In the course of working on these projects, we have accumulated quite a bit of information on puppet opera. Jim and anyone else interested, please email me or Stephen Carter if you have any specific questions or areas of interest. We'll see if we can help or put you on the trail. Now time to get back to rehearsals.
