Just fine.  After placing the back of a head in plaster, I'd use shims down 
the face of the sculpture.

Usually, the density of the plaster is enough to keep the object from 
sinking.  But sometimes, a thin dowel stuck in the sculpture acts like a 
handle.  You can remove the dowel and patch up your work before you complete 
making the mold.
