The marionette is carved out of bass wood (otherwise known as whitewood). 
I'm not a wood carver, but my late-uncle who was a well-known gunsmith and 
decoy maker always said that it was easy to carve because of its tight 
grain.

What I marvel at is the fact that the Baird marionette is so well jointed 
that it has almost no extraneous movement and the knee and elbow sockets are 
practically invisible.
