This weekend was the FIRST new Saturday date ADVANCE issue of the Times for Sunday, hence the Date July 16---and the image of the puppets is in "China's Visual Awakening" by Suzanne Muchnic---the work is titled "Forbidden City". On MY msntv sytem, the picture was slow to download, but DID come up. You will probably get quicker results. In the process of checking this out, on the Times' CALENDAR section for today, there is an article about me and COPA, with a photo of yous truly (looking half awake---which I was, having just returned from San Francisco and Lettie Schubert's Memorial in June) shown with Rand Bohn's puppet Richard Nixon (which appeared in PETER RABBIT as Farmer MacGregor. Gee, I almost missed seeing this article . It was written a month ago, waiting for a slow news day. My usual spies who alert me to such things are still in Missouri where they went to the Midwest Puppetfest. I wrote an article suggesting Julie's Lion King realizes Craig's theories: puppets, masked actors, dancers, music together in one production that was published in The Puppetry Yearbook, Volume 5. Companies are often happy to keep stuff out of the landfill, especially for 'family-friendly' causes. A government-funded agency in Vancouver called the Materials Exchange maintains a database to match materials with re-users. I keep my list of 'wants' with them and receive regular calls. A recent success was two TONS of coroplast on pallettes, delivered, no charge. Another company in town specializes in 'sourcing' clean, colourful industrial scrap that is garnered and resold for children's crafts. A reliable source will provide regular materials for years to come. The consumer recycling stream is truly marginal compared to the macrocosm of industrial waste products. There's unbelieveable amounts of waste out there. Just grab a yellow pages and start sourcing. Currently in the USA (land of freedom according to our fork-tongued President, who has actively divided our citizenry since he entered the White House as chief resident) he has tried to ban flag burning protests (not many since the 1960s, so hardly a big issue to even raise), violate the Geneva Accords re: prisoners, and "protect marriage" by banning gay marriage all in the name of religious values. I had a landlord once who would NOT enter the house because it was full of idols, including some Sicilian knight puppets. Well, I didn't mind him staying outside where he belonged anyway. I have seen the enemy and it is not us, its them.... I was just re-reading Bil Baird's chapter on Sicilian puppets, and the Manteo Family's theatre on Mulberry Street in NYC. On the famous feast of San Gennaro in little Italy, the Manteos had a marionette saint float down on a fake cloud from a hole in the ceiling above the stage. After blessing the audience and working a miracle (versus an erupting Mt Vesuvius), the saint was assumed into heaven again, via his strings. It must have been a beautiful thing to see. I was interested in reading about the Manteos as my own puppets have been having costume work done on Bayard Street, not far from the theatre's former spot. As crazy as that "demon" web page is, it does inadvertently drop in, if rather haphazardly, some very interesting nuggets of random puppetry history! He was a street preacher on L.A.'s skid row in his spare time. The only reason he owned the house was that his wife had bought it in one of her "insane moments", and she was living in an asylum when I was her husband's tenant. Seems to me a touch of hell was part of that preacher's life on earth. At that same house, an art class from Immaculate Heart High or College in Hollywood came to visit to see my puppets. My favorite memory of that house was seeing famed serigraph artist Sister Corita in full regulation habit, photographing some puppets sitting on the cover over my gas stove. I didn't have a lot of display space and had to make do. Corita later went back to wearing civilian clothes and opened a studio in Boston. She also designed a "Love Stamp" for the US Post Office as part of her art production. But while still at Immaculate Heart, she and Sister Magdalene Mary formed an amazing folk art collection which included many puppets. George Latshaw was one of many puppetry L.A. visitors I took to see that collection. One time Immaculate Heart College hosted an appearance of Bread & Puppets on campus. (Just once). Supposed to perform at campus lunch hour, the troupe showed up late and without any bread---they had spent too long at Santa Monica Beach that morning. Corita Kent was a great art teacher. And I don't think she went to hell. My landlord may have. Those fellows weren't exactly known for being kind. I know that one playwright, who worked almost exclusively for a puppet theater, was tortured and killed towards the end of the Inquisition. It is said that one of his shows was going on at the theater as he was being killed. I continue research into this when I have the time and I think I can track down the scripts (I know of about 6 or 8). It would be interesting to restage his shows. His life story would be good for people to know about too. Puppets often have trouble keeping their big mouths shut and that can be dangerous at times. However, as discussed many times on puptcrit regarding puppets and politics, the commentary is also an important aspect of puppetry - just try not to get yourself arrested if the Inquisition resumes. Sadly, the majority I've met seem to fall closer to the first category. I know how it sounds, but really look around, and you'll see what I mean Most of the "backwards" category has or had the potential to be exponentially better, but chose to settle with a life of narrow-mindedness, or even worse, or robot living. My usual example of robot mindedness: Me: is it possible to get a special exemption for that clause? Clerk: No. Me: How come? Clerk: it's not possible. Me: can you explain further? Clerk: I don't know about this. Me: Can I talk to someone who would know? Clerk: you can't do that sir... me: Why? Clerk: because you can't!!!! (clerck becomoing more and more unstable and panicking) The story, much much longer, brings me to departmentss after departments in different buildings, ends with me getting what I wanted after a hard day's labyrinth work. I ended up getting my info and solution at the first office I went to, with that same clerk. she just had to ask her "superior" who had his office door a few feet away. Those people are not people, they are robots. They are much worse-off than slaves, because they put themselves in that situation and remain there by choice. I have yet to see a robot-minded person in the puppet business. But I'm pretty sure they are lurking somewhere, or working besides our field. After all, we need clercks too. I'm not saying all clerks ar like that (I used to be one, and not a robot either). I'm just saying the standard clerk is like that. Mathieu Ren? Cr?aturiste Marionnettes, Masques, Etcetera...
