Subject: [Puptcrit] Washington DC Fringe Festival

The first annual DC Fringe Festival is under way. Included in the 100+
productions are several puppet pieces. I saw three of them in the last
two days- each very different from the others and each furthering the
notion that puppetry is a serious art form. "Dis/Appearing" is a wordless
puppet piece based on Billy Collins' poem "Walking across the Atlantic",
created and performed by Lost & Found Puppeteers. Hotel Obligato Physical
Theatre's contribution to the Fringe is a tour-de-force one-man riotous,
bawdy mask and puppet performance called "Punch's Progress- A Pulcinella
Story". The elegant "Prufbox", by Happenstance Theatre, explores T.S.
Eliot's "The Lovesong of Alfred J. Prufrock" through movement, fragments
of dialogue, and object manipulation. There are other puppetry
performances at the Fringe, which runs through Sunday night, July 30.
