Steve, there is a difference between theatrical velvet and regular
velvet.  Velveteen, such as you buy at a fabric store is not
appropriate for Czech black.  The nap is not deep enough to create a
truly dense black.

My personal opinion is that you are better off biting the bullet and
investing the money now than trying to come up with a stopgap measure.
 It will be more expensive in the long run.
