Another thing you could try is monofilliment fishline. Get some heavy
duty (50lb or heavier) monofilliment line. Melt the end with a lighter
and then flatten it while it's still molten to form a kind of giant pin
head. Cut it and thread it through the hole and then melt down and
flatten the other end the same way to make a sturdy nylon rivet of any
length you need. We use that technique a lot for jointing our OP
shadow puppets, because the nylon rivets dont scratch the transparent
plastic playing table. But I don't see why it wouldn't work for
attaching control rods as well.

(Are there 50lb fish in Indiana? If not you might have to move to
Florida, Maine or Alaska)

As for puppet rods, I don't think acrylic would be so great because
it's kind of brittle. The slightest torquing pressure will just snap
them off at the hole. If you have a good band saw, you can cut a bunch
of thin strips of 3/8" polycarbonate (lexan). That won't crack when try
to drill it, or if you twist it violently in performance.
Another possibility are umbrella spokes. Buy the cheap, no-folding ones
and deconstruct them-- you get 8 nice springy rods for 10$. After a big
thunderstorm you can harvest them off the street for free.

Okay. Keep us posted on the results.
