At the PoA National Festival in, umm, I think Seattle, the workshop 
presenter for toy theater showed us a smoke effect he used. A small tester 
that plumbers et al. use to test for leaks in gas lines. It is a small 
squeeze bulb attached to a thin line, in all looking much like the bulb 
described by Brett, but it gave an incredible smoke effect that swirled and 
moved like the smokey substance it was. I haven't used it myself, but it was 
so cool, now I'm tempted to go googling for it.
