I have emailed Mike to see if he still has copies and if so if he would like to supply people direct or have me handle the sales for him. I have asked Mike to let me know a price if he still has them. I would guess around =A35.00 ie approx $9.30 and will let you know as soon as I get a response. In the meantime if you would like a copy please let me know via Ray-AT-PuppeteersUK.com so I know how many to obtain. It is a nice piece of shadow puppet history to have. There is a delicious interview with an operator of one of these shows in Mayhew's London Labour & London Poor (1861) under the heading 'The Chinese Shades' It begins "The proper name of my exhibition" said a showman of this class to me "is Lez Hombres, or the shades, for Baron Rothschild told me so when I performed before him. We calls it the Chinese galantee show...." Dover did a reprint of these and it is in Volume III along with interviews with many other street performers of the time. Just wanted to follow that trail of thought with details on "The Galanty Showman" originally published by H.G. Clarke in the late 1800's then republished by Mike Bartley in 1977. It includes the characters, sets, proscenium and scripts for a three little shows ( The Broken Bridge, The Enraged Cobbler, Billy Button). None actually feature Punch as a character but the cobbler named Jobson in the second play listed has some similar traits to good old Mr. Punch. I haven't seen copies of this readily available in the U.S. but perhaps it can still be found in the UK. If it is, I imagine Ray DaSilva would know. Since Ray doesn't toot his own horn, his online bookshop is a great resource and I encourage puptcritters to check it out whenever looking for puppet books (except new ones): http://www.puppetbooks.co.uk/ Now to say goodbye, I steal a nice little quote from the publication I mention: Thanks my dear young friends, who've smiled on this little play. I hope to see you here, quite well, some other day. - - Hope to see some of you in Tacoma, quite well, at the fest this week.
