I thought you all should know about Clay and Paper Theatre's Toronto
production of Cam=F5es, the One-Eyed Poet of Portugal . It has found
tremendous resonance in the Portuguese and local communities. The puppet
design by Mark Keetch is brilliant. There are cubist hand-puppets, rod
puppets, body puppets, a shadow show, a cabe=E7udo (a Portuguese "big-head"
puppet}, and fantastic poetry in two languages in a beautiful park setting,
The Fado music is heartfelt. For information on the show and times please

Dear Dan-
Great designs. I especially identify top middle guy (aging hippie with pony
tail) Are you doing show with these characters?

Just got to see the Good Eats with Alton Brown with the behind the scenes
footage. Lots of fun, and he obviously likes puppets. Keep your eyes out.
It's bound to repeat again on the Food Network.

Great news! More than 200 titles from the P of A AV Library have been
converted to DVD's and may be borrowed through the Puppetry Store. To find
a list, go to _www.puppeteers.org_ (http://www.puppeteers.org) , click on
Services, then AV Library. You can't order directly through the web site
yet, but can e-mail or call the Store to place an order. Some cool stuff.
You must be a member of P of A to use the service.

Two companies, epilog and universal "versalaser" can be used. Cost is 10k.
Apparently there are cheaper models in the 5k range, from a chinese company.
I know a guy in chicago, Tom Bobko, <tom-AT-bobkodzign.com> with a versalaser
that has a 12x16 bed - that is the limit in terms of size, though you can
make the puppet in pieces.
You have to know Adobe Illustrator VERY well to make the vector files that
the computer can read. Then you've got to figure out an elegant way to
attach them to sticks - still a problem for me. The cutting isn't expensive
- $25-$35, but getting the design right and vector files is very time
consuming. Have a proof paper cut version done before making one out of
plastic or acrylic.

Puppets pictured were carved by Indonesian artists to my specs. I can
connect people up with Indonesian carvers. The leather puppets are not just
functional and well balanced, but tough and can be stand-alone art objects.
Price is around $35 as well, finished.
