Subject: [Puptcrit] First review of Fox Lantern show which just opened in

See

http://www.reviewplays.com/foxlantern.htm

for first review of Fox Lantern, put together by Leslie Gray and Sam Koji Hale using small and light-weight beautifully modeled figures made with papier mache, used in a modified Bunraku technique (the review said Banraku, and called the figures "carved" when technically they were built up). Show has no dialogue, but great drum and flute LIVE music, some projected scenery that looks like Japanese prints--Sam and crew have a great looking stage set up. Intimate seating. $10.

FREE parking south of the Centenary Methodist Church social hall in church lot (metered street parking is 2 hours, show is about 1 hour)

Sam suggests reading the review afterward, but I think it is very helpful if read in advance, for understanding the non-dialogue presentation just as you would by reading a synopsis before seeing opera or ballet or a foreign language puppet show.

Especially if you have limited knowlege of Japanese culture, it gives a good background. It is not a kiddie show though children are welcome, but I don't recommend it for babies in arms. Older, precocious kids should understand, particularly if the review/synopsis is read in advance, and they are puppeteers' kids

I hope people visiting or living in Los Angeles can see this new work.
