Subject: [Puptcrit] Artificial dust?

Hi all.
Putting the final touches on our puppet movie sets, we are looking for an ecomical means to simulate dust.
Real dust would be a problem, we don't want to sneeze too much, and some of our cast and helpers have allergies too.

Right now we have debris that is supposed to represent the wall's inner insulation that fell over all over the floor.
It looks great and to scale. It is seed-like, maybe vermiculite? It is used to ship fragile items. We need something finer and perhaps darker to simulate dust and dirt on the surfaces.
We already haeve simulated it permanently on the walls, but the floors and other surfaces need that extra bit of realism that dust can bring.

Talcum powder is too white.
Sawdust is too light and looks like sawdust.
Charcoal is too dark and dirties everything.
Golden Sand seems inapropriate.
Powdered cocoa for dirt? Would that attract insects or rodents?

Our sets are indoors and mostly made of wood and dark metals, in all conditions, from clean to dirty to rusty to decomposed.

Any suggestions for a realistic looking dust effect?
Thanks!

Two more intensive weeks to go.
