To cut to a reaction shot of the host is a director decision.
If the star (Letterman) demanded it, I'm sure he would have it.
(Watch Leno, or Carson D., they are much more screen grabbing)
Letterman never does it during guest stand-ups or musician's songs.
Not inviting them to the couch is also consistent.
Most of the vent acts do stage or club shows for a living.
The point of a talk show spot is to hype & build your live show
audience.
The shorter the routine, the better, since once you give your material
away on TV, millions of people have already seen it.
Nightly live on tape TV chews up acts that depend upon the same
material for years, even decades of livelihood.
The Blue Man Group clones themselves and are everywhere, while the
original 3 guys create new shows while the clones make $ for them.
Not so the vent artists (altho a vent who had a "character like a blue
man could),
Bergan came at a time when he parlayed a live vaudeville act into
movies, radio (how weird) and eventually TV.
Plus as Letterman shakes hands just before they cut to commercial you
hear the first few words of his, which indicate that he already
personally knows these performers, probably from his years on the road
as a stand-up or this decades as a TV host.
My main problem with the week is no clips of Se=F1or Wences, who
performed in the Ed Sullivan Theatre many times, and lived a few blocks
away. Wenceswas the very first vent to be on the Letterman show, back
in 1982. Maybe they cannot get any rights. NBC owns the old Letterman
footage. Too bad.
