Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] Where's Pretty Polly

In my very, very early, days as a Punch Prof, I had Pretty Polly in my show. But "she" was actually an Indonesian wayang golek! (And in reality "she" was a he -- a cousin of Arjuna's, I believe. Fortunately, nobody in the audience ever looked closely enough to see the fellow's moustache.) Dropped that character after studying in England, where Polly was nowhere to be seen (with or without facial hair).

As for the crocodile, everybody has one of those!

And speaking of Mr. Gaiman, you might enjoy the top three photos thumbnailed here:

|Here's a quick question for all of the P&J Professors
|out there:
|
|In his wonderful graphic novel _The Comical Tragedy or
|Tragical Comedy of Mr. Punch-, Neil Gaiman suggests
|that Punch's mistress, Pretty Polly, is no longer a
|part of the show (he mentions a Jim Crow character and
|a crocodile that also faded out).
|
|Yet, Pretty Polly is very much on Punch's mind in the
|script published by Player's Press (which is readily
|available).
|
|Do any of you still use Polly as a part of your show?
|
|Much Obliged (atsawaytadoit!!)
