My favorite book on automata is "Cabaret Mechanical Movement" by Aidan
Lawrence Onn and Gary Alexander. It's the best I've seen for learning the
basics. Another good book is "Automata and Mechanical Toys" by Rodney
Peppe. An interesting subcategory is paper automata. A very good book in
this category is "Cardboard Engineering Source Book" by Rob Ives. I've
designed and built a few automata in the last few years and "Cabaret .." and
"Cardboard Engineering ..." have been a great help. There's a slightly
blurry animated gif of my first attempt hidden on my website at
http://home.earthlink.net/~huntermarionettes/PuppetFest2005/penguin.htm I
need to get some movies or animated gifs of my more recent (and improved)
stuff put together.

Kurt
