It's the best I've seen for learning the basics. Another good book is "Automata and Mechanical Toys" by Rodney Peppe. An interesting subcategory is paper automata. A very good book in this category is "Cardboard Engineering Source Book" by Rob Ives. I've designed and built a few automata in the last few years and "Cabaret .." and "Cardboard Engineering ..." have been a great help. There's a slightly blurry animated gif of my first attempt hidden on my website at http://home.earthlink.net/~huntermarionettes/PuppetFest2005/penguin.htm I need to get some movies or animated gifs of my more recent (and improved) stuff put together.
