Today there are fewer because handmade or repaired shoes are a rarity, thanks in no small part to modern manufacturing techniques and a disposable society. On a decent pair of shoes (as opposed to a really good pair) it is often cheaper to buy a new pair of shoes than it is to find a get a quality repair. And because many people want their shoes to change with the fashions, why repair a pair that will be out of style in another 5 minutes? Thank goodness puppetry doesn't suffer these same whims (said tongue firmly in cheek). Yes, there are new things, but a well done classic is still a well done classic and appreciated. Right, Jim?
