Subject: [Puptcrit] online index of puppet, mask and performing object videos

Thanks for asking, Steve. And thanks for the complement about the list.

I compiled the original list (53 items) in the autumn of 2004 for an undergraduate course on Puppets, Masks and Performing Objects that I taught at the University of Glasgow. There are few adult puppet performances to see in Scotland, and my students were hungry for visual knowledge. Online videos filled a gap in the curriculum.

I approached Ray DaSilva to include my list on the PuppeteersUK site during the same academic year and PuppeteersUK readily agreed. It was Ray's idea to organise the videos geographically (with Britain on top, of course). It has since been really a collaboration between Ray and me: I look for and describe videos, Ray checks the description and links and puts them up and filters through the occasional suggestion as well. (Thanks Ray!)

In 2004, the selection was very limited, but there is an incredible amount of online videos appearing almost daily now. Ray and I are thinking about how to deal with this change in scale. Any suggestions would be most welcome!

BTW, I continue to teach puppetry but have shifted now to using Moodle as an online learning environment for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Theory and Practice of Puppetry course I teach at Royal Holloway, University of London. I could provide a 'guest key' for anyone who wants to have a look at this site. Is anyone else on the list using Moodle or similar online learning applications for teaching puppetry?

Matthew
