Subject: [Puptcrit] Foam puppets: GeL contact Cement

Hi all.
Today I worked some more with foam, this time I used actual contact cement instead of the hot glue. I only used hot glue on minature puppets, and because I couldn't work the toxic stuff at home. But for this project, I work in a studio where nopbody actually lives.
So I bought a can of the gel contact cement from Lepage.
SO MUCH better! I used the gel version, which is amazingly easy to apply with a firm stick, stays on the surface of the foam, dries fast, and once the parts are joined, they are VERY strong!

The brand I used is Lepage Press-Tite, GEL. The label is pink.
Toxic stuff. I took a chance and used it outside, despite of the cold(winter is coming soon). It still worked. My volunteer assistants on the puppet building for this show, with no experience whatsoever with this type of work, made it work without any problem, except for a little excess glue application, meaning there was quite a bit on the outside surface of the work. It will be easy to hide with fabric. Partly my fault, I gave them pieces of cardboard as applicators, to avoid wasting a brush. the pieces were a tad too large, and way too soft after a few minutes of use. When it came for my turn to glue, the assistants were gone, I accidentally stuck my hands on the uncured glue from underneath an applicator (revenge!)and I had the idea of carving myself an applicator by flattening the tip of a quarter-inch wooden dowel. Wonderfully precise and ergonomic! I'm making one for home as well.

I have tried their non toxic version extensively in the past, and was VERY disapointed with the results, although after a few experiments I managed to find a way to make it work better.
It just ends up being way too much work. Try the toxic stuff, it's probably unbeatable!

That is, until someobody finally commercialises a protein-based line of glues inspired from the mussels, these little shell creatures that can stick to almost anything, even under water and on dirty surfaces!
