Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] Shadow lighting help - Halogen

As one who respects and greatly admires Jim Gambles vast experience and
knowledge I would only like to offer two caveats to his suggestion of
using Halogen lights. My own experience is that there are two factors
to using Halogen lights that potential users should be aware of and
that I have mentioned before when the topic has come up.

1. Halogen lights are much hotter than conventional bulbs. Not a
problem if they are far enough away from puppeteers and audience and
not overheating a confined space (as inside an enclosed shadow puppet
booth.)

2. Halogen lights are much more fragile than conventional bulbs,
especially when still warm from use - they take a long time to cool.
Not a problem if you are using a permanent stage in a permanent
location. With my own traveling shows, I had to switch back to
conventional bulbs when my expensive halogen bulbs kept failing because
I had to pack them up quickly after shows, before they had a chance to
COMPLETELY cool. Some older members may remember that in the days of
Carousel slide projectors it was recommended to run the fan for a while
after turning the bulb off so it could cool before moving/packing up
the projector - yes, those are halogen projector bulbs. Just my two
cents.
