Subject: [Puptcrit] Carmen Miranda on Ebay is NOT by Frank Paris

Hi All,

Please be aware that the Carmen Miranda marionette currently posted
on Ebay is falsely described as being made by Frank Paris. (Ebay
#260058382816) Don't be fooled. The real Frank Paris Carmen is the
property of the Conservatory of Puppetry Arts (COPA) in Pasadena,
California. According to Alan Cook, COPA's curator, the Carmen
currently posted on Ebay was made by Douglas Christopher-Burnham, who
often used Christopher as his first name.

Here's the scoop from Alan Cook: Christopher Burnham performed with
his Carmen marionette at a restaurant in Studio City, CA, and when he
died, his Carmen was put on display in the restaurant as a kind of
memorial. Soon thereafter, Carmen was sold to a private individual to
help pay for Mr. Burnham's funeral. At some point down the road, Mr.
Burnham's Carmen was auctioned off at a benefit for PBS Television --
and it sold for a very high price. Alan Cook did not attend the
auction, but he speculates that the puppet was misrepresented there
as being made by Frank Paris -- hence the high price. And,
unfortunately, the false identity has stayed with the poor puppet for
years and years and years. It's really a shame that Douglas
Christopher-Burnham is not being given credit for his creation.
