Will,
Thank you for this information. It reiterates what Sean mentioned and I
would bet this is what the teacher is thinking about. He(not being in
the puppet "loop") has meshed some things together. I'll try to clarify
for him when I call him.
Thank you again,
Susan

Yup, and he had a book on construction of large puppets, too. The
Puppetry
Store should carry it.

This really is a hard week for the puppetry community. First, George and
now, Fran. The first image that comes to mind with Fran is him tooling
around on scooter at festivals (especially at Toledo OH; he was like a
puppeteer version of "The Wild One"). One really funny and friendly guy.
Another person I'll miss.

I would like to say that George Latshaw was a kind, intelligent, and
spirited man who reached out to puppeteers like me with great excitement
about our common work. George was always supportive of my writing about
Bread and Puppet Theater in the pages of Puppetry Journal, although he
had never met me and didn't really know me. The few times I met him he
was always gracious and happy to talk about our shared interests. He is
the kind of person you wish you had had time to get to know better. He
made great contributions to puppetry with his production work (I wish I
had seen Billy the Kid), and his book on puppetry which you see again
and again on important bookshelves.

Shortly after George & Pat moved to Florida from Ohio, my wife Elise and
I
had the good fortune to do a video history with George. Elise
interviewed him
and I was the videographer. We spent several hours documenting his
amazing
career. He described how, as a young man, he had this huge crush on
actress
Leslie Caron. Then, one day not far in the future, there she was, just
on the
other side of the scrim, looking at him with her angelic face as he
manipulated the puppet. George said it was very surreal. This video
is now in the
possession of the Puppeteers of America video library. I don't believe
it has
been edited yet, but hopefully, one day soon, it will be available for
any P
of A members to view.

My wife and I have done 12 or 13 video histories during the past few
years,
among them Luman Coad, Terry Snyder, Pady Blackwood, Lenny Suib (now
deceased),
Carl Harmes (now deceased) and Doug and Gayle Anderson (Gayle recently
passed
away as well). This past week, the world has lost George Latshaw and
Fran
Dowie. I would encourage you to document the histories of renowned
puppeteers in your areas, while they are still among us, so that future
generations of
puppeteers (or just puppet enthusiasts) can appreciate and learn what
came
before them.

All the best to all of you
Bob & Elise

Greetings All,

Happy Holidays!

My theater company, Rogue Artists Ensemble (www.rogueartists.org) is
preparing to embark on a an adaption of the graphic novel, "Mr. Punch"
by
Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean. The project will combine puppets, masks,
digital media and is scheduled to open in April 07. Mr. Punch" focuses
on a
Punch and Judy performer at a sea side arcade in Britain in the 50's and
I'm
wondering if you, or anyone you know is a Punch professor located in the
Los
Angeles area? Ideally it would be fantastic to find someone interested
in
the project to either be an actor in the piece, perform as a puppeteer,
or
even assist in a directing capacity. So much of the success of the show
hinges on finding a really fantastic Punch Professor able to manipulate
both
the puppets, but also act opposite the other characters.

More info:

To celebrate Rogue Artists Ensemble's 5th Anniversary we will be
premiering
an original adaptation of the famed graphic novel Mr. Punch by the
author /
illustrator team of Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean. Brought to life by the
Rogue's in Hyper-theater, this project will feature a dizzying array of
visual elements to allow the audience to feel as if they have stepped
into a
graphic novel.

Originally published in 1995 and centered on a Punch and Judy performer
at a
sea side arcade and is a twisted tale of murder that explores the
fragmented
nature of memory. Mr. Punch is a dark fable about the innocence of
childhood
and the pain of adulthood.

Both Gaiman and McKean have created many best selling pieces of
literature,
comics, graphic novels and children's books, in addition to the recent
Henson Film's production of Mirrormask.

More information about this project is located here -

The Bursill Handshadows book reprinted by Dover is
acailable for download at Project Gutenberg as a .pdf
file. The Galanty shadows shows were indeed early
Victorian, an import of "ombres chinoise" from the
Continent. There are a number of books on shadow
theatre and teaching available through various library
systems and from the PofA bookstore. The Wisniewski's
"World of Puppets-Shadow Puppetry in the Classroom" is
a great place to start.

In the Minneapolis paper today, it mentioned that New York's
Metropolitan
Opera will be broadcasting six Saturday matinees to movie theaters
around
the country equipped with high definition screens and surround sound.
These
are one day, one time only events. The first is Mozart's The Magic
Flute
directed by Julie Taymor on Saturday, December 30th. Unfortunately,
I'll be
waiting for a plane at the time of this broadcast, but I figured I could
at
least spread the word.

You'll find more details at the Met's website at:

http://www.metoperafamily.org/metopera/broadcast/hd_events.aspx

There are also links on that page to find the theater nearest you.

Kurt
