You ever tried plastic shims? Ice cream lids etc cut to size? There is a 
plastic shim available with the key registrations embossed in...usually for 
silicon molds but works for plaster.
Just occured to me though, if you are using oil based clay for the plug and 
water based clay for the walls....why build a wall? just lay a strip of 
about 60-90mm wide clay as thick as the wall was going to be tall....or if 
its small enough encase the whole plug with clay where the plaster isnt 
wanted? You would only use a wall or shim when working with water based clay 
only......just a thought
