Hi Lorna,

For a long time, many puppet makers have used black braided nylon fishing 
line.
18 pounds of strenght with a silk core was mentionned in an old article.
Different weights have different thicknesses.
For securing knots in them, use a bit of superglue.

I have used the 25 pound and even the 15 pound with much success.
No mention of it having a silk core or not.
The brand I've used was called Northern.
