About shims, I found a better substitute, if you are still working with 
clay.
Apply some fine dental floss over the planned separation line, leaving lots 
of extra floss on both ends.

Then apply a thick and high strip of clay to the model, right over that 
separation line.
Then pull the string up until you have cut the clay into that NEAT smooth 
clay wall surface.
It only works on one side of the wall, so it is only appropriate when you 
are casting one part of the mold at a time.
It sure worked on my puppet head mold, for the facial separation.
That part did not need much cleaning up (which I did with a brush and 
water).
Too bad I did not know how to use it for the other parts (gravity working 
against me).
