While I share your disdain for wolves in sheep's 
clothing, the puppets and puppeteers you saw are 
almost assuredly of a different breed.  They were 
probably all volunteers, with no possible 
financial gain.  The were hoping to change 
lives.   So, some audience members may have seen 
those same puppet eyes, and somehow saw something 
beyond the glued-on wiggle eyes.

There is the possibility of a supernatural influence as well!
