Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] Taymor's Magic Flute

I have to say that I found Julie Taymor's production at the Metropolitan
Opera overblown to the point of being ridiculous. Her imagery is fantastic
and her style is captivating, but in this case, she did not adequately serve
Mozart's score. What makes that opera great is that despite the fairytale
plot and the libretto that is chocked full of awkward philosophical
"moments," Mozart is sensitivive to the plight of his characters, and
manages to convey countless nuances of their various relationships. All of
which were lost in Julie Taymor's collage of symbols.

The best version of The Magic Flute is by Ingmar Bergman. There's a master!
