THe practice was popular enough to be banned in the 8th century, but it apparently continued. The little bread boats (navettes) in Marseille seem to be a remnant of this practice--& various other religious devices & rituals may be as well. There are records also of creches made from bread dough. I think I've seen a picture of one. There also are cakes (flour, water, & butter) in the shapes of dieties in parts of India & Tibet. There' s a little section of my book, on p.218-19, about all this (though it doesn't have too much more than what I've just written here).
