Trev,

I have several antique figures and they are attached to their rods this way: 
one rod goes to each hand, the third to the chest way up near the neck. 
Each rod has at one end a wire loop, kind of like a handmade screw-eye.  The 
loops for the hands go through holes made by the cut-out designs on the 
figure.  The wire attached to the rod for the chest is a little longer and 
passes through the body and back out as if wrapping around it.  There are 
plenty of pictures in books and sometimes there are figures sold on ebay. 
You can examine those, though some are better than others, of course.
