The hand rods are generally tied loosely so that they can flip to either side. The main body rod is sewn onto the front of the neck. through the leather band that holds the head on. This rod has to be sewn rather tight so that you can have solid control over the figure. The body rod is usually bent with two right angles (so the eye of the rod jogs out about 1/2 inch off the rod) This allows it to clear the lower part of the body when you flip the figure. Olive Blackham's book, "Shadow Puppets" has a nice illustration of a chinese figure, though the neck attachment is not quite accurate.
