I once saw an exhibit "Ice Age Art" that included an articulated male figure 
carved from a mammoth tusk. From the Museum of California, Academy of Science 
in San Francisco, it was titled "marionette" dated from 35,000-10,000 BC. It 
could have been a doll, of course. As for the Venus of Willendorf, comparable 
non-articulated figures from Pre-Columbian societies were described by Spanish 
colonizers as manipulated in ceremonies. Conjecture, but makes sense. Nancy
