John Fox and Sue Gill founded Welfare State
International and have done all kinds of ceremonial
theater, much of it using puppets. In fact, WSI was
laid to rest (forgive me) so that they could explore,
in their own words "the area between theatre and
contemporary ceremonies for rites of passage" with
their new project called Dead Good Guides.

They are specifically interested in the uses of
theater as ritual and ceremony: weddings, births,
funerals.

WSI's approach to theater as a meaningful experience,
as opposed to commercial entertainment, has been
inspirational to me. It seems they're going further
in that direction, and I only wish that were more
common.
