Ukuleles are good, too. Of course, hurdy gurdies and organ grinders made and impact, and surely there must have been a capella singing from time to time. I speak here of the tradition in Enland, but it was probably similar in France and Germany as well. It's always seemed nice, to me, to open a pupept show with the riging of a handbell. Christopher Van der Craats of Australia has put some old music online... music from the old Punch & Judy show... it can be found if you navigate your way around www.punchandjudy.com. There was once a webpage for the Manteo Sicilian Marionettes (of the past), and at that site there was a snippet of rinkytink piano accompaniment. Live music is a great addition to puppet shows; I'm pretty sure Open Eye Figure Theatre had several musicians perfroming with their booth show "Katie Tomatie," and Ralph Lee and other New York and New Jersey groups use musicians... Steve Kaplin, John Bell, or Trudi Cohen should be able to speak about the use of klezmer music with recent performances. That's a great sound! Basil Twist is doing another opera with puppets at the Lincoln Center site next month-- "Petrouchka" this time. I am aware of the strong Javanese Shadow puppetry/gamelan association, as well as Bunraku, but at the moment am more interested in older Russian and eastern european styles. Unfortunately I'm finding it hard to locate much information in this area, as the traditions between music and puppetry don't seem to be as direct as in Asia. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! _______________________________________________ List address: puptcrit-AT-lists.driftline.org Admin interface: http://lists.driftline.org/listinfo.cgi/puptcrit-driftline.org Archives: http://www.driftline.org ________________________________________________________________________ Check out the new AOL.
