I used to be dead-set against making anything "temporary" or "ephemeral", then I was jolted back to reality by amazing shows which used those kinds of elements for making their puppets. I't all about the purpose. I now sometimes make puppets in newspaper and duct tape (for joints), covered in masking tape. Some have big wooden dowels (recycled coffe table legs) in the lower leg for added weight. No paint. My first one in this type is still one of the best puppet I've ever made, both for looks and for movement. It's two years old now, and still going strong (always use a good duct tape, not the all-purpose) With a team under my guidance, I just made puppets for a web publicity, and I overworked them. In all economical logic, I should have simplified the processes, made sure they lasted for the filmed performance (4 days) and not bother about posterity. Well, I just can't bring myself to do that when they look good. I feel like a father with every new creation, and I want them to have long life! Well, now I'm glad I made them strong, because I was told the puppets will be put on auction on Ebay, for a charitable organisation for children. I'll let the group know when the auction goes online, I still need to reach the production company. I do wish I could have kept at least one of them for myself, I cold play with it for hours! I'm told I'm too sentimental, but I can't help it, every creation I have to let go of becomes a heart-wrenching moment... _______________________________________________ List address: puptcrit-AT-lists.driftline.org Admin interface: http://lists.driftline.org/listinfo.cgi/puptcrit-driftline.org Archives: http://www.driftline.org
