As I read thru all the uses and non-uses that have been mentioned, one rather simple but, imho, accurate description is that puppets continue to do what they have always done. They are a tool, a resource. Puppets are, again imho, much like many other tools, in that the user can readily decide to limit the use to older, traditional ways or, easily invent new ways & reasons to use the tool. But the end result is always, in the most expansive sense, a tool for doing one of the most important activities that human beings engage in. That is to tell stories.
