Mid-upper torso is typical. The balance point will be determined by  
the puppet itself, and the way you like it to dance. If you costume  
it go for light fabrics and loose fit in places where you want easy  
movement. String it after costuming so you can see the dress  
rehearsal before you commit to a movement style. If you want  
percussion use hard wood feet, and put feet under your plank too, to  
keep it off the ground and allow for resonance.
