Hi Paul, I think DAP still makes the solvent-based Plastic Wood that was used in the method you're reading about. http://www.dap.com/product_details.aspx?product_id=69 It's been maybe twenty years or so, but I've made a couple of puppet heads using this plastic wood. I don't remember having much luck with the stuff - I always seemed to end up with annoying air bubbles - but it's possible that I had terrible technique!
