Laurie and Fred are still together ffty years after the Prince (Fred) rescued Goldilocks (Laurie)from the Recreation Department Tower where she then worked. The Prince drove a cardboard Austin-Healey sportscar. In the final scene, The King proclaimed the happy news to all the land as the Goldberg Variations by Bach (LP record) provided a joyful sound background. The big surprise for me was that only one person in the audience figured out the direction of the plot halfway through. (My high school art teacher, Hester Laumann, who had made a marionette devil in the 1930s which she gave me in 1949) The rest of the audience got the message with the King's royal proclamation. Another surprise, a few people claimed they had never seen a puppet show before. So I am a fan of puppet shows for special events like engagements, weddings bat/bar Mitzvas. In fact, at my funeral, I'd like a puppet show, but I'd like it to be a good show. In the 1980s, I saw Susan Bass do a show for a group Bat/Bar Mitzvah in San Pedro CA where Susan's brother was rabbi. She had a duck puppet and asked the kids in the audience what sound a duck makes. Some little smartass yelled. "oink, oink". Susan, fast thinking, said "Hmmmn, must be somebody here from a Reform Congregation". (yah, I know, I've told this story beore-it is one of my favorites). I hope next year we will get an update on a puppet show for a wedding at Longwood Gardens. Hope everyone gets a chance to see it. It's small, especially compared to his huge collection, but impressive. Here at Great AZ Puppets in Phoenix we are bringing Alan in on a regular basis with a new installation each time. Right now it's American puppeteers. As we finish each installation, we videotape Alan as we go by each display case. He talks about each of the puppets and their makers. He has lots of stories. Right now the tapes are just in our archives and need editing, but we're trying to capture as much of this history as we can. We hope to get some of it edited and make it available in P of A's audiovisual library. Nancy Smith In a message dated 7/4/2007 7:53:38 AM US Mountain Standard Time, puppetpro-AT-aol.com writes: ? Someone should interview you on a regular basis so that you can tap into your list of anecdotes and information. I wish I could do it, but I live in New York. My brother lives in Seal Beach, CA, but I'm not planning a visit anytime soon. By the way, I had a chance to see the film "Lily" with Leslie Caron and the Walton & O' Rourke puppets on the TCM cable channel. I'd seen it before, but it continues to charm. That should be required viewing of all aspriring puppeteers. If so, how?" Thanks Hi Mathieu and the list. Re cooking paper for papier mache: I learned to use fairly large pieces of torn brown paper soaked in water overnight, then brought to a boil in a large canning pot. You "stir" the mix during the cook time so all the paper is equally cooked. The heavy brown paper becomes very supple and almost skin-like after a while when treated this way. In the old days we wld laboriously tear up recycled brown bags, carefully tearing off the cut edges. Nowadays I just go to the paper-mill once in a while and indulge in a giant roll of heavy brown paper. It goes a long way even with the giant puppet heads. I also like cooked white-flour paste mixed with white glue [you could use Welbond for this!]. The addition of white glue deters insects, rodents, and quickens set up time. Basic kitchen chemistry... * Start with cold water in a pot with a good thick bottom. * Sieve the flour in gradually, whisking to get rid of lumps and stirring while you heat it slowly to a slow boil to avoid scorching. Keep stirring with a big wooden spoon while it thickens until it's thick, then remove from heat. It will thicken a bit more while cooling. * Sieve it after it's cooled to eliminate any lumps. Whisking keeps it fluffy. * Mix in the white glue till it's a consistency you like. * If you make a big batch you need to store the paste + glue glop in the fridge, to prolong its life. I use an ice-cream bucket with a lid. * A teaspoon of powdered ALUM in the flour + white-glue mixture [from a well-stocked grocery or drugstore] will prolong the life of the paste and reduce the chance of mould growth or stinkiness. Some people use Oil of Wintergreen instead - smells nice too. One was a Medieval Wedding with professional costumers outfitting all the guests and the entertainers were also in appropriate medieval garb and performed like a dinner theatre in a great hall at the Bear Mountain State Park Inn in NY. The other wedding was a daytime formal wedding in a park in Hartsdale, NY. I also performed "Prof. Frederick's Flea Circus" at my daughter's Bat Mitzvah during the cocktail hour. This version is a little more detailed in any event.-- SPK Dear Suzanne, I myself will be performing a puppet show for my sister's wedding in November. While satirizing marriage itself may be risky at a wedding... it could be done! I've done a translation of a 19th century puppet play about marriage which will be coming out in a book, in both French and English, next month. It's very violent, and more than a little cynical! And I think it's funny as well. (The book, by the way, from Canada's Charlemagne Press of Mr Luman Coad, with illustrations by The Old Trouts puppeteer Judd Palmer, and puppets by Petr and Katia Rezac, is called "The Merchant of Blows-with-a-Stick and Other Plays by Louis Duranty.") The script I was thinking of is called, "The Marriage of Reason," and was written for Pierrot and Madame Triffouillon. It's a French Punch & Judy, though whether I'll stage it at my sister's wedding, I can't yet say. It may be a little too raw. There could, however, be some very positive puppetry elements at a wedding -- cherubs sailing above the happy couple with a ribbon banner, etc. Animated flowers and puppet hearts could take part.... I remember reading that marionette angels could prove distracting in medieval churches when they appeared to blow out candles the priest or altar servers had just lit... the puppets were so funny, the Church ended up putting them out. An after service party, later in the evening at the reception, could be very raucous and naughty. Right now I'm planning to at least do a show for the children during the reception's open bar cocktail hour, which might not be naughty in the same way as the evening show, n'est ce pas?
