I wonder if a heat lamp would be useful as a substitute method.  I 
suspect it would take a bit longer to heat the clay up, and therefore 
the heat would penetrate a bit further into the clay, which may or 
may not be a good thing.

But the heat lamp can have its own hazards as the lamp and its 
fixture will certainly get quite hot.  But, perhaps this can be 
mitigated by making sure you have a clear area to lay the lamp - just 
as when you are removing a hot pan from the oven.
