I wonder if a heat lamp would be useful as a substitute method.  I
suspect it would take a bit longer to heat the clay up, and therefore
the heat would penetrate a bit further into the clay, which may or
may not be a good thing.

Hi Joe. The heat lamp is not usually a good idea for me, as it makez the 
heat go too deep, and threaten the structural shapes underneath, as well as 
make some thinner areas droop. One clumsy move of my hand and I could 
destroy an hour of work if the clay is too soft.

The flame is better, since it is instantaneous, and only heats as deep as I 
need it to.
A heat gun takes too much time.
