If it is, I know who made it... More later. Speaking of age - (not puppet related) Groucho Marx said: 'Ah to be 19 again...Or even fifty.' I'm well beyond 50 and have spent the better (depending) part of my life in theater. I have built over 2000 props, masks, chairs, costumes, and odd specialty stuff and have enjoyed it. But since I left theater and have been able to get back to puppetry, my mind IS 'young,' so to speak and I have been at my most creative. Much of that creativity has to do with my association with puppeteers. Especially the young folks who come through the O'Neill Puppetry Conference each year. I derive SUCH energy and inspiration from them and their point of view that I know I'd never be able to try all the ideas that have come of that association. For that time, and for weeks afterward (after I've recuperated) my mind is alive with possibilities. I can say that while I'm there with these wonderful talents, I may feel tired but I never feel old. I think it's called the 'Peter Pan Syndrome.' Get the idea? All the Best, Fred Thompson > Aaahh, tis a favorite of mine! Now, I will have to check it out as well > cause I don't believe I remember the puppets! It was great that so many of those graduates, as well as UCONN people, were able to attend the Rampage. Many performed as well. Groucho Marx, by the way, was one of the funniest men who ever lived (even though he was supposed to be extremely difficult to get along with). But you have to be careful with any kind of wise saying...... Failure HURTS! Be careful of being too self judgmental......(in the negative - like "my work is crappy") that will not lead to positive energy and output. Being objective is very hard to do. And there are a lot of elements that make up a live show.... The most important being the audience....( I think) Have always felt that a person has to live up to their limitations before they can exceed them.... There is a lot of exploration there. From ALL reports, it was one of the best, and you and Drew and your colleagues have much to boast about. Thanks. Was it Sam Clemens who said that the reports of his demise were greatly exaggerated? Given the opportunity I've had to witness the works of some really creative young folk at O'Neill and elsewhere, the suggestion that puppetry is a dying art is 'greatly exaggerated.' While what we are seeing is NOT what your grandmother saw, (nor should it be) some of the new works give me great hope for the future of puppetry. I feel emboldened to say that MORE people are involved in puppetry now than ever before and out of that mix, will come tomorrow's great talents. As you know, O'Neill is a give and take situation. How can one be immersed in such a gathering of ideas and enthusiasm all focused on one thing, and not come away changed? I always benefit from my time there AND they pay me as well!!! How great is that? Best, Fred Thompson > Fred, > ?? You are so right about the O'Neill.?? It was great that so many of those > graduates, as well as UCONN people, were able to attend the Rampage.?? So I'll quote Roser again. 'Don't try to be the best. Just try to be GOOD!' Failure does hurt. I'm not saying anything that we all don't know already, but (sorry) we learn from our failures. The hardest lesson is learning to not be afraid to fail. I'm still working on that one... Really. But there is a danger in not trying. Especially when one might miss the opportunity to experience that incredible moment when you 'know' that you, the puppet and the audience are one. That you've gotten over yourself and invested in the real purpose of your being there: to attempt to transport your audience through your art, if only for that moment, out of themselves to another place. It's such a joy to be in that moment and it's so elusive. You know that I've dismissed the old saw of 'the willing suspension of disbelief.' I SO believe in the power of the puppet that I'm no longer convinced that anything is or needs to be suspended. That in those special moments one does BELIEVE!!! I have no idea why it happens so I won't attempt to try to explain it. I just know it happens. I can't even explain what my fascination with puppetry is all about either. I just know that when I saw my first marionette show by the Roses, that was it. I was hooked. I have no idea why. As I said before, puppetry is unique in all the arts. Sorry for such a long-winded post.
