I used coffee filters with great success before, and shall again, now that I
know how to tear off the cut edges much faster (fold the coffee filter in
two or four, and tear off the edge).
Coffee filters are very fibrous, and 6 layers of them with yellow
carpenter's glue is sometimes "too strong" for certain applications.

The blue insulation foam I use is VERY fine in texture, meaning I can get
cuts in it reminescent of short grain wood.
I can refine the surface with files or sandpaper. It's very easy and quick
to glue in multiple thicknesses, using either contact cement, spray glue (3M
Super77), or hot glue (only for small pieces, as hot glue is hard to carve
and kills the sharpness of the craft blade...

I much prefer its texture to the porous cellular white stuff we get here
(craft stores: eggs, spheres, cones, cubes or sheets). It is weak and easy
to bump and dry-dusty to the feel. My hands hate it almost as much as the
green cheap foam for floral arrangements. But I'll admit both would be VERY
easy and quick to carve and bump into shape. I will give it another chance,
despite my aversion for its surface feel, and the amount of fine dust it
produces. It's all about the results!
