Some of these might be useful to you. Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Pierre Bonnard. Joan Miro, Jean Dubuffet to name 4 Oskar Schlemmer at the Bauhaus could also name drop Georg Grosz, Ferdinand Leger, Oskar Kokoschka. Deigo Rivera (all mentioned in Eileen Blumenthal's book) Alexandra Exter was an artist and set designer who designed some amazing cubist/modernist puppets for a film (never made) Sophie Taeuber Arp's puppets from 1918 still look modern and maybe even sci fi ish A number of artists known to us as puppeteers have reputations in the art world Ralph Chesse (WPA murals) Gustave Baumann Janie Geiser had many drawings published in the NY Times Illustrartor, Edward Gorey loved puppets and did some shows and on, you get the idea -------------------------------------------------- For Sci Fi appeal- puppetry was an important part of the original King Kong movie the Neil Gaiman/ Dave McKean "Tragical comedy or comical tragedy of Punch Judy" would be of interest ------------------------------------------------ Flat out beautiful puppets? some Bunraku figures Bruce Schwartz dont overlook Bil Baird- his "sculptures" are distinctive and expessive The late Arlyn Coad of Coad Canada designed some of the most beautiful puppets I can think of At the other end of the spectrum- Peter Schuman's work is rough but intense, powerful and expressive Best of luck with your talk Knock em dead Steve ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kathleen David" <kathodavid-AT-mac.com> To: <puptcrit-AT-puptcrit.org> Sent: Tuesday, August 28, 2007 8:35 AM Subject: [Puptcrit] Puppetry as Art >I am doing a lecture this year at DragonCon (a very large SciFi > convention in Atlanta) for the Art Show about Puppetry as Art. > > I know who comes to mind to me for this topic but I really want to > know who you think makes or what you think is Art Puppetry.
