From: "Kismet" <kismet-AT-bigpond.net.au> To: <puptcrit-AT-puptcrit.org> Date: Sat, 15 Sep 2007 08:20:42 +1000 Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] "Art for Art's sake" Interestingly the use of the word "unalloyed" may not be helping.....pure, not mixed with other (agendas, issues, praxis) alloys....perhaps "unallied" may be a better word ie not allied to other causes etc etc. I have long been an admirer (a disciple even) of the sculptor Brancusi who believed that all art always was and that it was the job of the artist as a technician NOT a creative to unlock the work NOT create. Michealangelo was in the quarry one day, buying Marble for a commission by the Pope when he asked the yardsman to also deliver this big daggy bit with lots of flaws to his studio. The yardsmen laughed and tried to talk him out of it but he persisted. He later said that as soon as he looked at it he could see "David" asking to be released. In my art, as opposed to my craft as a puppet/set/object/prop/scenic/actor artist, I try to bring this praxis to my work be it painting, sculpture or performance art (although my own gothic shock nature takes over a bit in environment manipulation) Van Gough in his letters to his brother (who actually sold a few of Van Goughs paintings for him....I believe Vincent was so excited when some one wanted to buy a painting from him that he gave it to them so the brother took over) talks of a persistent noise in his head, driving him like a big steam engine to paint. That probable describes my raison d etre, a huge engine driving me on to discover art...and believe me I often wish that I was an accountant or a store keeper with a model railway at home....life would be a lot simpler then...and eating.....and dressing and doing domestic things............ A good friend, colleague, peer committed suicide on Wednesday and Ive passed through the shock/confusion/anger/sadness into meloncholie and self doubt. Ce l vie, this too will pass.
