So perhaps it has run its course.....Hope so...But since I have been quoted and had other's thoughts attributed to me........ After framing a reply to ones of Malgosia's posts had an opportunity to sit on it for a bit when the crashing realization came that I personally have no business saying what "art" is or isn't should be or shouldn't be etc. I can say that something - ANYTHING that does not communicate to me (or at least attempts to) is not something that I have interest in. Period....it can communicate on a lot of different levels in a lot of different ways, some may even be inexpressible beyond "I like it" or wow!! As for a person who "creates" by themselves ONLY for themselves believe them to be a selfish performer (stretch the word). And again for me it holds no interest. There is another word that can be used - usually refers to a private moment of one for one....(am trying to be obtuse but hope it gets through). As exciting as it might be for the moment it is solitary and does no one except the doer any good and not for any period of time. We are (I believe) about relationships. To each other to the world around us....as artists (again understand that am uncomfortable using that word in reference to myself)...our job (or at least some part of it) is to reveal that which may be hidden or to light that which may be dark. To expose that which can be related to by a number of others. To create wonderment and awe.. To share a vision....To do SOME THING! But of course there are nuances on top of nuances. My acting teacher used to use wrestling matches as an example of good theatre. Martin Stevens used a dishwashing commercial as an example of dramatic content - form. I am theatre based and for that need an audience...it means it can't be for me alone EVER. Remember seeing a show at a festival really artsy - a good friend of mine who is here on puptcrit loved it and the performer. I didn't...Have a ton of respect for this person's opinion.....Have a ton of respect for the performer's capability. It worked for her, But didn't work for me. The question is what is working and again I will suggest it is communication. Okay so???? can't always have 100% Mark _______________________________________________ List address: puptcrit-AT-puptcrit.org Admin interface: http://lists.puptcrit.org/mailman/listinfo/puptcrit Archives: http://www.driftline.org
