What I have done is attach a painted sheet of muslim (painted with
flexible scene paint, by the way) to a wooden curtain pole.  I have taken
the wheel of a clothesline pulley and attached it to one end of the pole
(a bolt goes through the wheel into a drilled hole, and is fastened very
tightly).  The pole rests on two perpendicular bars at the top of the
stage, with the ends of the poles reaching out farther than the two
perpendicular bars.  A rope is hung from the wheel, and by pulling it, the
wheel turns and the painted backdrop goes up and down.
