Scott,
In the past I had to make a similar object. I used  one of those huge
rubber blow up balls...like an exercise ball but bigger. I bought it
in ToysR Us. I vaselines it and covered it in about 8 layers of paper
mache. When dry, disinflate and then you could add the legs and make a
rim of cardboard at the top to make it look like the top of a
cauldron.
